Overview
Acadia National Park is a national park of the United States located along the mid-section of the Maine coast, southwest of Bar Harbor. The park includes about half of Mount Desert Island, part of Isle au Haut, the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula, and portions of sixteen smaller outlying islands. The park contains the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Coast of the United States (Cadillac Mountain), exposed granite domes, glacial erratics, U-shaped valleys, and cobble beaches.

Best TimeMid-September to early October is the peak time to experience Acadia's famous autumn foliage. For an unforgettable itinerary, head up to Cadillac Mountain before 5:00 AM to witness the first sunrise in the United States, or visit Sand Beach around 2:00 PM on a clear day when the overhead sun turns the Atlantic waters a brilliant, translucent turquoise.
Getting ThereBy car, drive southeast from Bangor along ME-3 South for about 1 hour to reach the main entrance near Bar Harbor. Alternatively, you can hop on the complimentary Island Explorer Shuttle Bus at the Village Green in downtown Bar Harbor; Route 1 (Bar Harbor Loop) or Route 4 (Ocean Drive Loop) will drop you off directly at major trailheads and scenic overlooks inside the park.
Travel Tips
- Vehicle reservation warning: From mid-May through late October, driving the Cadillac Mountain Summit Road requires a dedicated vehicle reservation pass secured on Recreation.gov; this is entirely separate from the park entrance pass and cannot be bought on-site.
- Parking lots at Sand Beach and Jordan Pond routinely fill completely by 8:30 AM; save hours of gridlock by leaving your vehicle in Bar Harbor town public lots and utilizing the free Island Explorer shuttle bus system for seamless loop access.
- Drones are strictly banned by federal law, and visitors are legally prohibited from building random rock cairns which misdirect hikers from official trail markers; additionally, the steep Beehive Trail iron-rung climb becomes fatally slick during coastal fog or rain.
- NewOnly visit on clear sunny days — the coastal views lose most of their impact under overcast skies, so build a weather buffer day into your itinerary.
- NewRenting a car from Boston is a good self-drive option; stop by Portland on the way in, and squeeze in some outlet shopping on the drive back.

- Park fees are fair, but nearby Bar Harbor's dining and lodging prices are heavily inflated, bringing a commercialized, tourist-trap feel.
- Coastal weather is highly erratic. Heavy thick fog can roll in for days, completely blocking shoreline views, causing a big visual letdown.
- NewThe harbor area itself isn't especially worth visiting just for the scenery — the real highlights are the summit and coastal trails.
