Overview

Connecting the bustling urban core of downtown Ithaca directly with the Cornell University campus, the Cascadilla Gorge Trail is a thoroughly enchanting, historic stone pathway carved into an active river gorge. This spectacular pathway climbs over hundreds of vertical feet via hand-carved stone staircases, guiding excited walkers past eight thundering waterfalls cascading over ancient bedrock. Covered completely in damp green ferns and mosses, it provides pedestrian travelers with an exceptionally scenic, nature-infused shortcut that perfectly isolates them from modern city noise.

Practical Info

Suggested Duration1-2 hours
Best TimeOpen seasonally primarily from May through November annually due to hazardous winter icing conditions. Architectural and trekking purists revere a clear morning hike at 10:00 AM. This ancient trail is built directly into a deep shale gorge, featuring historic hand-carved stone steps climbing alongside eight cascading waterfalls; filtered morning sun pierce the ancient trees, delivering a mystical aesthetic.
Getting ThereThe urban canyon trail bridges downtown Ithaca straight to the Cornell University campus. The lower main entrance trailhead originates at Cascadilla Park at the dead end of Linn Street. Because central vehicle parking is non-existent at this residential gate, parking downtown and walking 8 minutes north from The Commons is highly advised. The TCAT Bus Route 10 also services the upper campus gateway.

Travel Tips

  • Connecting downtown to Cornell, this stone staircase trail undergoes complete seasonal closure from late November through mid-May due to catastrophic winter ice accumulation and rockfalls.
  • The route features hundreds of wet, narrow stone steps; bicycles, strollers, and scooters are banned, and deep-lugged non-slip rubber shoes are critical due to constant rock wall weeping.
  • The lower trailhead at Linn Street has no public parking spaces; blocking private residential driveways results in immediate towing, so use the downtown Green Street municipal garage.

Reviews

Positive
  • A stunning hidden gem of a gorge trail connecting downtown Ithaca to the Cornell campus! Stone bridges and ancient trees frame 6-7 consecutive waterfalls tumbling through shale cliffs.
  • The entire trail is constructed from rustic stone steps and sturdy iron handrails, offering solid safety measures and clear signs to enjoy wild nature right off the city edge.
  • Unbeatable value! A completely free public nature trail that takes about 30 minutes one-way; walking with the sound of rushing waters instantly melts away stress in a serene setting.
  • Superb geographic convenience; both trailheads seamlessly connect to city transit, and the upper exit leads straight onto campus, perfect for combining town and university tours.
Heads up
  • This is definitely not an easy stroll. While short, it consists almost entirely of hundreds of consecutive, steep stone steps with high vertical gain, brutal on seniors' knees.
  • Built deep inside a narrow, shaded cliff gorge, it is completely inaccessible for wheelchairs or heavy strollers. Some narrow sections easily bottleneck when busy.
  • For safety management against ice and winter rockfalls, the entire trail is heavily locked and closed from late autumn through spring (usually Nov to May), making it easy to miss.
  • There is no dedicated large free parking lot near the main trailheads; drivers must rely on paid city street meters or costly university garages where spaces are scarce.
