Overview
Castle Island is a spectacular, deeply scenic waterfront park spanning 22 acres at the extreme eastern tip of South Boston, overlooking the shipping channels of Boston Harbor. Connected smoothly to the mainland by a pedestrian land bridge, the park is historically anchored by Fort Independence, a massive stone star fort constructed originally in 1801. It is an incredibly popular sanctuary for walking along the seaside harborwalk, watching massive commercial planes land, and enjoying fried clams.

Best TimeThe peak time to visit is summer from June to August when Fort Independence is open for interior tours. Late afternoon is magical for walking the harbor loop, enjoying ocean breezes, watching planes land at Logan Airport, and grabbing a hot dog at Sullivan's.
Getting TherePerched at the tip of South Boston's coastline, you can take MBTA Bus Route 07 or 11 to the eastern end of Day Blvd. Driving is highly convenient, as a sprawling, free outdoor public surface parking lot surrounds the park entrance.
Travel Tips
- Fort Independence is only open for interior public tours on summer weekends (May–October). The rest of the year, visitors are restricted to the exterior harbor trails.
- While parking at the William J. Day Blvd lots is free, it fills up fast on summer weekends. The ocean winds are punishingly strong; always pack a windbreaker even in mid-summer.
