Heading to the High Knob Overlook at the mountain summit between 6:45 AM and 8:30 AM is highly recommended; the entire Frederick Valley below often fills with early morning valley fog, revealing stunning mountain ridges piercing the golden sunrise.
Getting ThereSet up high on the Catoctin ridge, requiring a car. From historic Frederick, travel west on US-40 W for roughly 6 miles, turn right onto Gambrill Park Road, and ascend the winding mountain asphalt for 2 miles to access the dedicated parking lot serving the High Knob Overlook areas.
Travel Tips
- The 16-mile rugged trail system features severe loose-rock terrain and steep drop-offs; except for the 1-mile White Oak loop, trails require ankle-height technical hiking boots and trekking poles.
- The park enforces cash-only entry via standard honor boxes (3 USD in-state, 5 USD out-of-state); no card readers or change-making machines exist on-site, making exact physical bills mandatory.
- To stop the spread of invasive forest pests, bringing outside firewood into campgrounds is legally banned; all firewood must be purchased on-site for 5 USD at the park bathhouse.
