Getting ThereNo direct public transit options exist; driving is mandatory. From Charleston, take I-64 E / I-77 S to Exit 96, merge onto US-60 E (Midland Trail), and drive east for approximately 40 miles. The main park lodge and tramway terminal parking lot sit directly off the highway.
Travel Tips
- The aerial tram operates seasonally and is highly weather-dependent. If the tram is closed, reaching the jetboat dock at the bottom of the gorge requires a steep, rocky hike that is very strenuous and not suitable for strollers or seniors.
- Cell service drops completely when descending into the gorge or hiking certain trails like the Cliffside Trail. Download offline maps and screenshot your lodging or jetboat tour confirmation codes before arriving at the park.

Best LightThe main scenic overlook parking lot is right off the highway and very small, often filling up by midday on weekends. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon for easier parking and optimal lighting to photograph the New River Gorge panorama.
