Overview
Itasca State Park ( ) is a state park of Minnesota, United States, and contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The park spans 32,690 acres (132.3 km2) of northern Minnesota, and is located about 21 miles (34 km) north of Park Rapids, Minnesota and 25 miles (40 km) from Bagley, Minnesota. The park is part of Minnesota's Pine Moraines and Outwash Plains Ecological Subsection and is contained within Clearwater, Hubbard, and Becker counties.

Best TimeAs the world-famous birthplace where the mighty Mississippi River begins its 2,552-mile journey, early morning from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM in June or late September is pristine. The prime experience is standing at the Headwaters stone dam completely crowd-free, letting you wade barefoot across the shallow rocks in mystical river mist.
Getting ThereSituated 23 miles north of Park Rapids at 36750 Main Park Drive. Driving a car is mandatory: take MN-71 N north straight into the state park boundaries. Follow the extensive park wilderness loops to the Mary Gibbs Headwaters Center portal, which provides an enormous, well-organized free public surface lot directly facing the trailhead paths.
Travel Tips
- The rock stones at the Mississippi Headwaters are coated in slippery moss; standard water shoes with aggressive rubber lugs are required, as open-toed sandals lead to frequent falls and fractures.
- From May through September, the narrow Wilderness Drive loop bans RVs and trailers exceeding 24 feet in length; long setups must unhook and utilize the main Mary Gibbs Center paved parking spaces.
- The headwaters zone is a highly monitored wildlife reserve enforcing an absolute federal drone ban; removing or pocketing any natural river stones or fossilized gravel from the riverbed is completely prohibited.
