Getting ThereLocated deep in the Red Desert, 30 miles north of Rock Springs. Drive north on US-191, then transition onto unpaved dirt backroads like County Road 17. High-clearance four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles are absolutely mandatory for sandy conditions.
Travel Tips
- As the second-largest moving dune system in the US, OHV riding is popular. Vehicles entering must have true 4WD and high clearance. Regulations strictly require an 8-foot safety mast with a bright red or orange whip flag mounted to the rear to prevent blind-crest head-on collisions.
- Air down tires to 10-15 PSI before venturing onto the dunes to increase flotation and prevent getting bogged down. There is zero shade and sand surface temperatures can soar to 140°F (60°C) by noon; never wear sandals, flip-flops, or mesh shoes.
- This region is extremely remote with zero cellular service, fuel stations, or potable water. You must stock up on extra fuel canisters, massive water supplies, and paper or offline satellite maps in nearby Rock Springs, and carry a shovel and traction boards.

- During hot summer middays, the sand surface gets hot enough to burn skin; with zero shade on-site, dehydration and heatstroke are huge risks.
