Overview
La Jolla Shores Park is a spectacularly wide, mile-long crescent of soft golden sand that is widely considered one of the safest and most multi-functional recreational beaches in Southern California. The beach features gentle ocean waves due to its unique coastal positioning, making it absolutely perfect for beginner surfers, stand-up paddleboarders, and families with young children. The adjacent grassy park offers convenient picnic tables, modern shower facilities, and plenty of room to play.

Best TimeDaytime during summer and autumn is optimal for kayaking, surfing, and snorkeling. July through September is the prime season when hundreds of harmless leopard sharks gather in the shallow waters, offering a unique snorkeling experience.
Getting ThereDrive via I-5 and exit onto Ardath Road or La Jolla Village Drive toward the coast. There is a large free parking lot adjacent to the beach, which fills up by 9 AM on summer weekends. Alternatively, take MTS Bus Route 30 and walk over.
Travel Tips
- This is one of the few local beaches permitting kayak launches. If bringing personal craft, you must use the designated designated 'Green Launch Zone' near the north end—launching outside this zone triggers lifeguard citations.
- The complimentary on-site public parking lot is extremely competitive, routinely filling up before 8:30 AM during peak summer weekends. Avoid blocking residential driveways or parking along red curbs; towing is highly aggressive.
