Best TimeThe dry summer months from May to October are best to avoid hazardous muddy trails caused by winter rains. The absolute golden window is early morning from 5:45 AM to 7:15 AM. Hiking early avoids punishing sun exposure and rewards you with Oahu's premier sunrise from the ridge summit, illuminating the turquoise waters and the iconic twin Mokulua Islands perfectly.
Getting ThereParking is strictly prohibited in the adjacent residential zones. By transit, take TheBus Route 67 from Ala Moana Center to Kailua Town, transfer seamlessly to local Route 671, and disembark at the Kaelepulu Dr & Aalapapa Drive stop directly facing the trailhead. Drivers must park at the distant Kailua Beach Park public lot and walk 15 minutes to the mountain base.

Travel Tips

  • The trailhead has zero public parking; surrounding residential streets enforce aggressive no-parking codes on weekends and holidays with heavy fines.
  • The unmaintained dirt ridge path becomes dangerously slick when wet and loose when dry; there is absolute zero shade or canopy along the entire ascent.
  • The concrete military bunkers feature exposed rusted rebar and no guardrails; standing on the roof edges for photos is an extreme fall hazard.

Reviews

Positive
  • Also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, the summit yields an unobstructed bird's-eye view over Lanikai Beach's breathtaking Tiffany-blue ocean and the iconic twin islands—a priceless legendary view.
  • The path preserves authentic WWII military bunkers (pillboxes) adorned with colorful street graffiti, creating a high visual contrast and photo fun where historic ruins meet modern art.
  • No tickets required; open 24/7 for free. For lovers of hard-core outdoor sports and hiking adventures, it delivers a highly challenging, top-tier raw experience rewarding you with the island's best sunrise.
  • The trail route signs are explicit along the way. Despite being a wild trail, the ridge offers sweeping visibility, and hikers frequently encourage each other, maintaining a healthy, upbeat atmosphere.
Heads up
  • Driving parking is an absolute and total nightmare! The trailhead sits deep in an upscale residential pocket with zero official public lots; streets are highly prone to heavy parking tickets or towing.
  • The start is intensely steep, made entirely of loose red dirt and crumbly gravel with zero artificial steps or guardrails; rain turns it into a slick slide, making falls highly likely without hiking boots.
  • The entire ridge trail is completely exposed to the blazing sun with zero shade, and there are absolutely no restrooms, trash cans, or water refills, leaving basic infrastructure heavily deficient.
  • Due to its recent explosion in fame, morning tourist density and crowding are highly exaggerated. Tight bunker tops get packed with people lining up for photos, completely smothering any raw tranquility.
