Overview
Pilot Knob State Park is located southeast of Forest City, Iowa, United States. Founded in 1923, it is one of the oldest state parks in Iowa. Between 1990 and 1995 one area was named nationally recognized historic district and five structures were individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Best TimeEarly to mid-October during peak autumn foliage in northern Iowa is a magnificent time to visit. It is highly recommended to hike the shaded trails early in the morning between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM to ascend the landmark stone observation tower built by the CCC atop the glacial moraine ridge; the crisp morning sun pierces the forest mist to unveil sweeping 360-degree views of the colorful prairies.
Getting ThereLocated just 4 miles east of Forest City at 21481 Pilot Knob Road. Driving is the only practical transport method; travel east from Forest City along IA-9 E, make a right onto Pilot Knob Road (County Rd R70), and drive south for 2 minutes to the stone pillars entrance. Free, spacious gravel parking lots are fully provided right at the scenic overlooks and the unique Dead Man's Lake trailheads.
