Overview

Founded in 1823 as one of Harlem's oldest parishes, St. Mary's Episcopal Church completed its current brick sanctuary in 1908. Notable as one of the first churches in New York City founded by and for Black congregants, it served as the poignant onscreen setting in Ragtime for the grand, sorrowful funeral of Sarah, the young mother whose tragic death triggers the film's climax.
