Getting ThereThe trailhead begins right inside the central Skyland Resort sector off Skyline Drive. Drive via the primary Parkway directly to Milepost 41.7, veer into the northern Skyland entrance loop, and park immediately at the designated free paved Stony Man trail lot. Infrastructure is excellent.
Travel Tips
- The main Stony Man trail is relatively gentle, but dog owners must note: while pets are allowed on the Appalachian Trail portion, they are strictly prohibited on the final 0.4-mile spur leading directly to the exposed summit cliffs.
- The summit consists of raw, unprotected granite ledge outcroppings with a sheer drop-off and severe sudden crosswinds. Never step backward without looking, and turn back immediately if lightning or thunderstorms are detected.
- During the October peak autumn foliage season, this trail faces extreme foot traffic bottlenecks. If you cannot arrive by 8:00 AM to beat the leaf-peeper crowds, divert to the lesser-known Little Stony Man trail for similar views.
