Best TimeMid-to-late April in the spring is the absolute best time to visit, when the meadows surrounding the iconic National Capitol Columns are lush and blooming. The mild spring climate is perfect for exploring the massive park on foot or by bicycle.
Getting ThereThe arboretum is expansive and far from a Metro line. Take the Metro Red Line to Union Station, catch the B2 bus northbound to Bladensburg Road, and walk about 10 minutes to the main entrance gates off New York Avenue.
Travel Tips
- Spanning 446 acres, the various collections and the iconic National Capitol Columns are miles apart on winding, hilly roads. Walking the entire site causes severe exhaustion. You must either drive your own vehicle (free lots onsite) or rent a Capital Bikeshare/e-scooter to travel inside.
- The arboretum has two main gates. Note that the R St rear gate frequently closes earlier than the main New York Ave entrance; use the main gate to avoid getting locked inside vehicle loops. There is zero food infrastructure; vending machines are often empty. Bring all supplies.

- Shoot the columns between sunrise and 9:30 AM to avoid harsh, shadowed backlit conditions on portraits later in the day. Walk to the far edge of the oval reflecting pool directly in front of the columns. Drop your lens low to the water line for a symmetrical masterpiece reflection.
