Overview
Vedauwoo () is an area of rocky outcrops (Sherman Granite) located in southeastern Wyoming, United States, north of Interstate 80, between Laramie and Cheyenne. Its name, according to some, is a romanized version of the Arapaho word "bito'o'wu" meaning "earth-born". Vedauwoo is located in the Medicine Bow - Routt National Forest in the Pole Mountain Recreation Area.

Best TimeBest from June to September. Due to high elevation, summer brings delightfully cool weather for rock climbing and camping. Late afternoon is the magical hour for photography when the setting sun paints the unique granite hoodoos crimson and gold.
Getting ThereLocated between Laramie and Cheyenne. Take Exit 329 (Vedauwoo Road) off Interstate 80 (I-80), then drive along the well-maintained gravel access road for about 1.5 miles to reach the primary recreation area parking lot.
Travel Tips
- The Sherman Granite here consists of exceptionally sharp, coarse crystals that shred bare skin. Whether expert or novice, wrapping hands with heavy climbing tape and wearing thick abrasion-resistant long layers is non-negotiable.
- This USFS day-use area requires cash/check envelope payment at self-service kiosks or displaying a valid Interagency Pass. Granite surfaces heat up severely by noon; schedule vertical climbs between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM.
- Sitting near 8,200 feet, the crags face intense wind shear and lightning. Helmets are safety-critical; un-roped free soloing on raw rock formations is dangerous. Watch your footing for prairie rattlesnakes nesting inside rock fractures.
