This sprawling, 160-room Victorian mansion was continuously constructed over thirty-eight years under the personal direction of Sarah Winchester, the eccentric heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. Believing she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by the famous rifles, she ordered bizarre architectural features designed to confuse ghosts, including staircases that lead directly into ceilings, doors opening into mid-air drops, and labyrinthine secret corridors.
