The Carnation City

About this city

Also known as: The Carnation City

Alliance is a charming, historic manufacturing city situated primarily within Stark County, with portions extending into Mahoning County in northeastern Ohio, nestled beautifully along the Mahoning River. Formally incorporated in 1854 through the dramatic merging of three smaller railroad pioneer settlements, the city owed its grand name and destiny to this strategic alliance of the Cleveland and Pittsburgh and the Ohio and Pennsylvania railroads. For over a century, Alliance thrived as a major industrial powerhouse producing heavy steel cranes and heavy machinery, which attracted massive waves of European immigrant homesteaders. Today, anchored by the University of Mount Union, the city proudly preserves its deep railroad heritage and classic midwestern values, widely celebrated for its spectacular annual carnivals and pristine botanical gardens.
