Anamosa is a historic, deeply unique river city nestled within the dense, rolling limestone cliffs of the Wapsipinicon River Valley in eastern Iowa. Incorporated in 1856, the city is heavily defined by its massive, castle-like historic limestone architecture, built primarily from the famous nearby Stone City quarries. Anamosa holds a legendary status in American fine arts as the birthplace and longtime painting inspiration of Grant Wood, the master regionalist painter who created the iconic masterpiece American Gothic.
