Artesia is a dynamic, tightly-knit city situated in Eddy County within the sun-baked Pecos River Valley of southeastern New Mexico. The town owes its unique name and founding to the discovery of vast underground artesian aquifers in the early 20th century, which quickly transformed a barren desert landscape into a flourishing agricultural oasis. Shortly thereafter, the discovery of oil secured Artesia's status as a major powerhouse for petroleum refining and energy production in the Permian Basin. Despite its heavy industrial roots, the city takes immense pride in its immaculate, tree-lined downtown district, which is beautifully adorned with monumental bronze sculptures detailing the colorful history of oil drilling, ranching, and indigenous encounters.
