Atchison is a picturesque, historic city located in Atchison County along the western bank of a dramatic bend in the Missouri River, in northeastern Kansas. Incorporated in 1855, the city developed rapidly as a dominant 19th-century river port and western terminus for early railroads, notably lending its name to the famous Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Atchison is internationally recognized as the birthplace of legendary aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, who was born here in 1897. The city's geography is distinctly defined by steep loess hills and river bluffs, which support an impressive architectural landscape of Victorian mansions, historic brick streets, and a long-standing reputation as one of the most haunted towns in the Midwest.
