Established by French colonists in 1699 as Fort Maurepas, it served briefly as the capital of French Louisiana and stands as one of the oldest European settlements in the American South. During the 20th century, Biloxi boomed as a massive global seafood processing powerhouse, earning the moniker 'Seafood Capital of the World'. Following the legalization of dockside gaming in the 1990s, the city transformed into a booming resort destination. The contemporary city landscape features a striking mix of soaring luxury casino resort hotels, historic live oak groves, and miles of white sandy beaches.
