Human settlement here dates back thousands of years to indigenous shell heaps, followed by 17th-century English fishing camps that rivaled Jamestown in early strategic importance. Today, Bristol functions as a tranquil maritime community defined by its rolling coastal pastures, active lobster harbors, historic archeological excavations, and one of the most photographed rocky lighthouses in the nation.
