Originally named Red Jacket, the village exploded into a high-wealth metropolis in the late 19th century as the absolute headquarters of the legendary Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, which produced over half of the nation's copper. Built entirely of heavy red Jacobsville sandstone and brick to survive intense subarctic blizzards, the town represents an unparalleled architectural time capsule.
