Incorporated in 1836 and named in honor of New York Governor DeWitt Clinton, the town originally boomed as a prominent lumber shipping, coal transit, and river logistics center. Clinton holds a monumental, heroically significant place in American Civil Rights history as the home of the 'Clinton 12,' the twelve courageous African American students who integrated Clinton High School in the autumn of 1956—standing proudly as the very first public integration of a southern high school in United States history. Today, the town coordinates a thriving economy built on advanced automotive manufacturing, high-tech engineering networks, and a world-famous antique commerce district.
