Excellently positioned along the fall line of the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama border, Columbus is Georgia's second-largest city by city proper population. Established in 1828 as a planned industrial port city, it harnessed the river's immense water power to grow into one of the largest textile manufacturing centers in the American South, heavily supporting the Confederacy during the Civil War. Columbus is the historic birthplace of Coca-Cola, as local pharmacist John Pemberton formulated the original French Wine Coca here in 1885. Today, the city is a booming military and corporate powerhouse, anchored by the adjacent Fort Moore, while boasts the world's longest urban whitewater rafting course directly running through its restored industrial downtown.
