Gateway to the Stars

About this city

Also known as: Gateway to the Stars

Coudersport is an historic, isolated mountain borough serving as the county seat of Potter County, deeply hidden within the rugged, densely forested Allegheny Plateau of northern Pennsylvania. Formally laid out in 1807 and named in honor of Jean Samuel Couderc, a prominent European banker who supported early American pioneering loans, the town grew along the upper Allegheny River as a roaring powerhouse for hemlock logging and tanning during the late 19th century. Today, with the old sawmills gone, Coudersport has transformed into a globally renowned sanctuary for dark-sky astronomers and eco-tourists. Surrounded by millions of acres of pristine wilderness, it offers a beautifully preserved Victorian downtown that stands as a peaceful outpost of rugged frontier independence.
