Custer is a legendary, well-preserved ghost town located within the rugged Salmon-Challis National Forest along the Yankee Fork River in Custer County, Idaho. Founded in 1877 following a major gold rush strike in the mountains, the city boomed furiously as a wild mining frontier hub complete with a massive stamp mill, saloon network, and wood-framed cabins. Deserted entirely by 1910 as the gold veins dried up, it stands today as a haunting, protected historic outdoor museum charting the triumphs and hardships of pioneer miners.
