Perched beautifully in the mountain ridges of Lumpkin County in northern Georgia, Dahlonega is a historic mountain city celebrated as the site of the first major gold rush in the United States, beginning in 1828. Named after the Cherokee word meaning 'yellow' or 'gold', the boom was so substantial that a U.S. Mint branch operated here between 1838 and 1861, producing gold coins stamped with a distinct 'D' mark. After the rush subsided, the city transitioned into a regional agricultural and academic center, anchoring the University of North Georgia. Contemporary Dahlonega is highly regarded as the heart of Georgia's wine country, offering a beautifully preserved 19th-century public square packed with tasting rooms, historic architecture, and artisan boutiques.
