Beautifully positioned on the Altamaha River delta just miles from the Atlantic ocean, Darien is the county seat of McIntosh County and Georgia's second-oldest planned city. Founded in 1736 by Scottish Highlanders led by Captain Hugh Mackay under General James Oglethorpe, it served as a vital strategic military outpost defending the early British colony against Spanish forces in Florida. During the 19th century, Darien grew into a major international shipping port for premium timber, though it was tragically burned to the ground by Union forces during the Civil War in 1863. Rebuilt after the conflict, the town evolved into the historic heart of Georgia's commercial shrimping industry, defined today by historical waterfront ruins, grand oak trees, and a historic working waterfront harbor.
