Beautifully split by the rushing waters of the Piscataquis River in north-central Maine, Dover-Foxcroft is the historic county seat and largest municipality of Piscataquis County. Formed in 1922 by the historic merger of two rival towns situated on opposite banks of the river, its identity was forged around 19th-century water-powered industries, specifically large-scale woolen manufacturing mills, tanneries, and lumber works. Following the decline of traditional New England manufacturing, the community adapted successfully, transitioning its industrial brick mill infrastructure into modern residential and cultural spaces. Today, Dover-Foxcroft functions as a peaceful rural service center and the premier southern gateway to the vast, undeveloped wilderness lakes and mountains of the Maine Highlands.
