Dubuque is Iowa's oldest city and a historically dense, architecturally grand masterwork terraced dramatically onto towering limestone cliffs overlooking the wide waters of the upper Mississippi River. Established in 1833 by French-Canadian fur trapper Julien Dubuque, the city grew into an early industrial powerhouse driven by lead mining, heavy lumber milling, and elite riverboat commerce. Dubuque is famous for its remarkably intact Gilded Age urban core and boasts incredible technical engineering feats designed to master its precipitous, Alpine-like urban topography.
