About this city
Galena is a stunning, beautifully preserved historic city nestled among the dramatic unglaciated rolling hills of Jo Daviess County in the far northwestern corner of Illinois. Named after the abundant lead ore mined by Native Americans and early pioneers, the city boomed in the early 19th century as a powerful Mississippi River steamboat port and famously served as the home of General and President Ulysses S.
