Greensburg is a resilient, world-renowned town located in Kiowa County in southwestern Kansas, situated along the flat high plains. Settled in 1884, the town gained early roadside fame for constructing the world's largest hand-dug well in 1888, serving as a vital fresh-water oasis for steam locomotives. In May 2007, Greensburg was catastrophic destroyed by a massive EF5 tornado that leveled 95% of the community. In an unprecedented move of community determination, Greensburg completely rebuilt itself as a model eco-municipality, becoming the world's leading town in per-capita LEED-certified platinum buildings and fully powered by 100% renewable wind energy.
