Incorporated in 1750 by Royal Charter, the community represents one of the oldest rural townships in northern New Jersey. The town's historical trajectory has been defined by primitive agricultural homesteading and early iron ore transport, escaping modern suburban development to retain its old-growth hardwood forests and crystalline freshwater bogs. Today, Hardwick functions as a premier premier gateway for world-class outdoor recreation, most notably hosting a significant portion of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the high sandstone ridges of the Ridge and Valley geological province.
