Originally a booming lumber and gold mining town in the early 20th century, Helen faced severe economic collapse by the 1960s as the wilderness resources were depleted. In a brilliant feat of urban reinvention, local business owners collaborated with an artist in 1969 to mandate that every building conform to a classic Alpine Bavarian village aesthetic. Today, the entire town features gingerbread trim, cobblestone alleys, and German beer gardens, transforming it into a massive tourism hub celebrated for its yearly Oktoberfest, mountain tubing, and old-world European charm.
