Jamestown is a vibrant, expanding commercial city serving as the county seat of Stutsman County, beautifully positioned at the scenic confluence of the James and Pipestem rivers in east-central North Dakota. Founded in 1872 during the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad, the city earned its permanent title as 'The Buffalo City' due to its deep historical ties to the massive American bison herds that once thundered across the surrounding James River Valley. Jamestown is globally celebrated for its majestic, 60-ton concrete bison sculpture, which has guarded the prairie horizon since 1959. Today, the city combines its rich frontier railroad heritage and manufacturing economy with a proud cultural arts center, university campus, and exceptional outdoor water-trail recreation.
