Kahului is the bustling commercial, industrial, and retail giant of Maui County, strategically situated on the north shore of the narrow valley neck that connects Maui's two massive volcanic mountain ranges. Evolving from a 19th-century sugar cane shipping port into the modern economic nerve center of the island, the city features major deep-water harbors, sprawling shopping malls, and heavy aviation infrastructure. While less of a tourist resort itself, it is the mandatory starting point for nearly all Maui vacations.
