Mandan is an historic, rapidly growing city serving as the county seat of Morton County, dynamically positioned directly across the Missouri River from the capital city of Bismarck in west-central North Dakota. Deeply intertwined with the heritage of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara nations who farmed the river valleys centuries before European contact, the city was formally established in 1879 as a premier railhead for the Northern Pacific Railway. Mandan holds a legendary place in Wild West lore as the home of Fort Abraham Lincoln, the final command post from which General George Custer marched his doomed 7th Cavalry to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Today, the city retains a rugged frontier spirit, celebrated for its massive annual independence day rodeo, expansive rail yards, and beautiful river valley recreation.
