Marathon is a historic, highly scenic rural desert enclave located in Brewster County, beautifully positioned within the vast, high-altitude grasslands of the northern Chihuahuan Desert in far west Texas. Founded in 1882 during the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad and named by a sea captain who remarked that the rolling mountain horizons reminded him of Marathon, Greece, the town blossomed into a massive regional shipping powerhouse for cattle, wool, and rubber. Today, with the old stockyards gone, Marathon has transformed into a world-renowned sanctuary for dark-sky astronomers, artists, and eco-tourists. Sitting at an altitude of over 4,000 feet, it offers a beautifully preserved historic adobe core anchored by legendary luxury hotels, acting as the premier, peaceful northern basecamp for exploring the wilderness canyons of Big Bend.
