Located just fifteen miles northwest of downtown Atlanta in central Cobb County, Marietta is a historic and booming city that serves as one of the largest and most dynamic suburban anchors within the Atlanta metropolitan area. Incorporated in 1834, the city grew quickly as a prominent hub for the Western and Atlantic Railroad, though it was heavily ravaged by Union forces during the 1864 Atlanta Campaign. Rebuilt rapidly, Marietta industrialized significantly in the 20th century, anchored by the massive Bell Aircraft plant (later Lockheed Martin) which manufactured legendary military planes during World War II and the Cold War. Today, the city seamlessly coordinates its historic, oak-shaded town square with a thriving modern economy driven by high-tech manufacturing, defense contracts, and higher education.
