The borough commands a monumental place in American military history as the site of the historic 1777 Battle of Red Bank, a crucial land and marine conflict during the Revolutionary War where heavily outnumbered American forces successfully defended Fort Mercer against a massive Hessian artillery assault. Today, the town functions as a peaceful, tight-knit waterfront suburban community, carefully preserving its incredible military heritage along its scenic river overlooks.
