New Town is a culturally rich, economically active city located in Mountrail County in northwestern North Dakota, serves as the tribal headquarters for the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation (the Three Affiliated Tribes). The town was newly created in the 1950s to replace several historic river communities that were permanently flooded by the construction of the colossal Garrison Dam and the rise of Lake Sakakawea. Situated beautifully at the crossing of the majestic lake via the Four Bears Memorial Bridge, New Town stands at a major geographical and cultural crossroads. In recent decades, the city has evolved into a key industrial operational hub for the booming Bakken oil shale formation, balancing immense tribal sovereignty and heritage preservation with modern industrial energy development.
