Pembina is an historic, geographically significant rural city located in Pembina County in the extreme northeast corner of North Dakota, uniquely positioned at the confluence of the Red River of the North and the Pembina River, directly along the Canadian border. Formally established in 1797 as a fur-trading post by the North West Company, Pembina holds the grand distinction of being the oldest European-American settlement in North Dakota and the entire upper midwest region. For over a century, it was a pivotal geopolitical outpost contested by fur traders, British empires, and young American nations. Today, while retaining a peaceful, unhurried frontier river-town atmosphere, Pembina acts as a critical international trade corridor, home to one of the busiest rail and highway ports of entry on the United States-Canada border.
