For thousands of years, Native American tribes have traveled to this sacred site to quarry the rare, soft red claystone layer used explicitly to carve sacred ceremonial peace pipes. Pipestone features a majestic Downtown district constructed entirely out of locally quarried pink Sioux Quartzite stone blocks, offering a sophisticated and historic structural heritage.
