Port Arthur is a historic, heavy-industrial maritime city located in Jefferson County, dynamically positioned along the western shores of Sabine Lake and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in the extreme southeast corner of Texas. Founded in the late 1890s by railroad visionary Arthur Stilwell as the premier southern terminus for his Kansas City Southern Railway, the city's destiny was fundamentally revolutionized by the nearby 1901 Spindletop oil gusher. Port Arthur exploded into one of the largest petroleum refining and shipping powerhouses on earth, a legacy that completely dominates its modern industrial skyline today.
