Richardton is an historic, deeply spiritual rural city located in Stark County in west-central North Dakota, beautifully positioned along Interstate 94 on a high prairie ridge. Founded in 1883 by land developers Rickert and Christian, the town quickly attracted a large colony of highly devout German-Russian Catholic immigrant homesteaders. Richardton is globally celebrated for the Assumption Abbey, a magnificent, monumental Bavarian-style Roman Catholic Benedictine monastery established in 1893, whose twin 100-foot towers soar majestically above the flat wheat-field horizons, earning it the title 'Cathedral of the Prairie.' Today, the town preserves a deeply peaceful, hardworking agricultural lifestyle interwoven with dense spiritual history and rich German-Russian heritage.
