Sargent's Purchase is a vast, entirely unorganized alpine wilderness territory encompassing the rugged southeast heart of the Presidential Range within the White Mountain National Forest. Purchased historically in 1832 by Jacob Sargent for timber harvesting, the rocky terrain was quickly recognized as too topographically extreme for major development. Today, this roadless sanctuary serves internationally as the absolute epic center of extreme mountaineering and subarctic climate science in the eastern United States, completely containing the majestic, wind-swept summit of Mount Washington.
