Formally established in 1829 by pioneer Christian Shank and named in his honor, the community long existed as a tranquil, tight-knit village supporting small dairy farms, timber milling, and local coal mining operations. Shanksville was forever etched into global history on September 11, 2001, when United Airlines Flight 93 tragically crashed into an open field just north of the borough after its 40 heroic passengers and crew revolted against Al-Qaeda hijackers. Today, the village acts as a place of immense national pilgrimage, hosting a monumental federal memorial that honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
