Situated in eastern DeKalb County just fifteen miles east of downtown Atlanta, Stone Mountain is a historic city famous for its proximity to the massive quartz monzonite dome of the same name. Incorporated in 1839 as New Gibraltar, the town developed rapidly around the commercial quarrying of its high-grade granite, which was shipped nationwide for major infrastructure projects. In the 20th century, the area transitioned into Georgia's most visited tourism destination following the creation of Stone Mountain Park, which features the world's largest bas-relief carving on the mountain's rock face. The contemporary city preserves a quaint, historic downtown village filled with 19th-century architecture, juxtaposing its quiet residential neighborhoods with a high-capacity state park infrastructure.
