Situated within St. James Parish along the rich, alluvial south bank of the Mississippi River, Vacherie is an unincorporated historic community at the very heart of Louisiana's River Road region. Emerging in the 18th century as a prime area for early French Creole settlers, its name is derived from the French word for 'cattle ranch'. During the 19th century, the fertile soils led to the construction of some of the most opulent and architecturally significant sugarcane plantations in the United States. Today, Vacherie operates as a world-class destination for historic and cultural tourism, heavily preserved to tell the dual stories of elite Southern agricultural wealth and the painful history of the enslaved people who built it. The landscape is defined by vast sugarcane fields and iconic live oak canopy avenues.
