Valdez is a vital coastal port city beautifully positioned at the head of a deep fjord in Prince William Sound, encircled by the snow-capped Chugach Mountains. Originally established during the 1898 gold rush as a tragic trail route to the interior, it was later relocated entirely to stable ground following the devastating 1964 earthquake. Today, Valdez is world-famous as the northern maritime terminus of the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline, seamlessly combining heavy industrial infrastructure with spectacular alpine scenery.
